Alcohol and alcoholic beverages should not be taken alongside Generic Flagyl as this can cause severe diarrhea, vomiting, headache, stomach/abdominal cramps, and flushing. It is recommended that patients who take this medicine in the oral form, should not take alcohol during Flagyl therapy and for 3 days after finishing the course. There are many medicines, some of which are sold over-the-counter that contain a certain amount of alcohol, and these have to be avoided also while patients take this medicine.
Flagyl cannot be given during the first trimester of pregnancy, as Metronidazole is known to cross the placental barrier and can harm the fetus. During the remaining 6 months of pregnancy, if the physician feels the benefits outweigh the risks, only then is the medicine given to such patients. It is recommended that women should not breastfeed their babies if they are taking this medicine, unless their gynaecologist/physician decides otherwise.
For women who are taking an Oral Birth control pill or using contraceptive patches, there is a slight risk of an unwanted pregnancy, if they take Flagyl at the same time, therefore you must consult your physician for an extra method to prevent childbirth, and continue with that for a week after Flagyl therapy ends.
For individuals who are being treated for Trichomoniasis [a sexually transmitted disease – STD], condom usage is recommended during Flagyl therapy. Since this is an STD, both partners have to be treated to avoid re- infection, but the dose is different for women and men, and based on the medical condition of the patient.
The geriatric population that is always at risk when it comes to medication, should be more careful about their activities if they are taking a course of this antibiotic.
The medicine may increase drowsiness in some people, so those who drive or perform risky activities, should refrain from doing so, until they know how this medicine is going to affect them and are sure of handling its’ effects.
This drug can cause false test results in certain lab tests that include liver function tests and blood triglyceride levels, so if you have to go for these tests, let the doctor and lab personnel know that you are taking Metronidazole
