Metronidazole interacts with various medications. Before you buy Flagyl, give your treating doctor a full list of the medicines [prescription & OTC] as well as nutritional supplements and herbal products being taken by you, so that the physician can advise you which medicines have to be dropped, and work out the correct dose regimen of Flagyl for you. If you have an allergy to Metronidazole or any other derivative of Nitroimidazole [to which group of drugs it belongs], let the doctor know beforehand, so that this medicine is not given to you.

If this medicine is taken concomitantly with anticoagulants like Warfarin, or Nicoumalone, the risk of bleeding can increase in such patients; if you must have the anticoagulant medication also, the doctor may reduce the dose of that medicine.

Antiepileptic medications like Phenobarbital reduce the effectiveness of Flagyl, by causing a decrease in the blood level; to counter this the doctor might give you a higher dose of Flagyl. If it is taken with Phenytoin, Flagyl may increase the blood levels, which will have to be monitored by lab tests.

For patients who are being given immunosuppressants such as Cyclosporin, or mood stabilizers like Lithium, together with Flagyl [Metronidazole], will also be required to undertake lab tests to get their blood levels and kidney function checked from time-to-time.

The medicine given to treat cancer, Flourouracil, can increase the side effects of Metronidazole, though Flagyl does not reduce the anti-cancer effect of Flourouracil.

It is recommended that Cimetidine, the histamine H-2 antagonist that is used to treat duodenal and/or gastric ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease, should be taken a couple of hours before Flagyl, otherwise it can increase the blood levels in the patient.

For alcoholics who are on Disulfiram therapy [for treatment of chronic alcoholism], it is recommended that Metronidazole should not be taken at the same time, as both medicines together can adversely affect paranoia, enhance psychotic symptoms and cause hallucinations. There should be a gap of at least two weeks after Disulfiram therapy ends, before a patient takes Metronidazole.

Alcohol itself does not work well with many medicines. It is recommended that if you are taking Metronidazole, then you must stay off alcohol or alcoholic beverages while on Cheap Flagyl therapy and for at least 48 hours after it is over. There are many products sold over-the-counter that contain alcohol, including cough-and-cold medicines, and aftershaves, which should not be used either while you are taking this medicine.

Those patients who are taking an Oral Birth Control pill or using contraceptive patches, may be required to adopt an extra method of contraception if taking Flagyl, as there is a low risk that this medicine may lessen the effect of the Birth Control pill or patch.

Administration of Amprenavir oral solution, an inhibitor of HIV protease, is contraindicated with Flagyl.

Metronidazole may affect certain blood tests, so when you go for a lab test, you must inform the doctor or lab technician that you are taking a course of this medicine.

Do not begin, increase, decrease, or stop the medicine on your own; do not share it with anyone else either.
